BACKGROUND

WriteResponse is a reviewing and writing blog started by independent emerging and established writers to encourage critical analysis of the arts in Tasmania.   With experience as playwrights, actors, producers, journalists, editors and visual artists, we aim to provide interesting responses to art and culture and creative writing in response to life and art. Connected through a love of writing and a passion for the arts WriteResponse comprises of individuals from a range of backgrounds.

Since it began in May 2009, there have been more than 150 reviews published on WriteResponse and a number of other arts and media sites. They received funding in 2010 to take a team to Junction Arts Festival and in 2012 received Regional Art Funding to support 8 writers to go to Sydney to cover the Biennale.

WriteResponse exists to:

  • provide responses to creative endeavours and reflect upon life and art
  • develop the writing and editorial skills of a group of individuals
  • increase dialogue and reviewing of the arts in Tasmania
  • increase the calibre and amount of reviewing of the Arts in Tasmania
Writers are based in the North and South of the state and come together for workshops, events and writing opportunities. Writers are both emerging and established and contribute their time to viewing, reviewing and editing works for publication on the blog.

The writers first connected during the arts@work Critical Acclaim project, where more than 50 articles and reviews were published in several statewide and national online and print media outlets during Ten Days on the Island. From there we developed the WriteResponse blog as an independent arts reviewing site.

We hope that in the future WriteResponse will support contributions from a large body of emerging writers, assuring that critical discussion, debate and review will continue to play a role in the growth of Tasmania’s arts sector in a local and national context.
